Drosophila speciosa sp. nov. from: Belém, Pará, Brazil, is described and morphologically compared to a closely related species, D. aguape Val & Marques, 1996. Adult specimens of D. speciosa sp. nov. were collected while visiting T. speciosum Willd. ex Spreng. flowers in EMBRAPA's Theobroma Linnaeus germoplasm collections (113 individuals) in Belém and in Caxiuanã Scientific Station, in Melgaço, Pará, Brazil (four individuals). Emergent were obtained from T. speciosum flowers in both localities being four adults in Caxiuanã and 532 in EMBRAPA. Other eight emergencies were registered from Passiflora edulis Sims flowers in Curuçá, Pará, Brazil. |

The costs of living with wildlife are assessed using Namibian subsistence farmers willingness to pay (WTP) for deterrents to attacks on crops and livestock as a measure of damage costs. A utility-theoretic approach jointly estimates household WTP for deterrent programs in two currencies, maize and cash. This has a double payoff. Use of a noncash staple increases respondent comprehension and provides more information about preferences, improving the accuracy of results. The household shadow value of maize is also identified. Significant costs from living with elephants and other types of wildlife are demonstrated. Compensation for farmers may be warranted on equity and efficiency grounds. Uncontrolled domestic cattle generate even higher costs to farmers... |

There exists an urgent need in fisheries science for simple models for assessing the impact of fishing on the dynamics of fish communities. We present a new class of predator prey models that describe the relationship between predators and their prey by piecewise-linear differential equations. Interactions are governed by threshold values for population abundances. The simplest model has four distinct cases with different asymptotic stable states. The model allows for fishing mortality on both predator and prey. If fishing mortality on either the predator, the prey or both are varied, the system might move to new stable states. The threshold values act as reference points for fishing exploitation, as they indicate a structural change in the predator-prey... |

Nautilocaris saintlaurentae gen. nov, sp. nov, is described and illustrated from hydrothermal vents in the North Fiji Basin and Lau Basin in the south-western Pacific. This new taxon is assigned to the Alvinocarididae. It has a well-developed, dorsally dentate rostrum, carapace with pterygostomian spine present, eye broadly fused mesially, epipod-setobranch complex present above pereopods, and appendix internae on second to fourth pleopods greatly reduced. This combination of characters places it in an intermediate position between a group of species in the genus Alvinocaris with well developed, dorsally, dentate rostrum, carapace with pterygostomian spine present, eyes narrowly fused mesially, epipod-setobranch complex absent and well-developed appendices... |

Although there is a widespread assumption that organic farming developed in response to the intensification of agriculture in the second half of the twentieth century, a number of scholars have sought to show that the origins of the movement date to the 1920s and 1930s. They argue that that there is continuity in the development of the organic movement and that the ideals and values of the early organicists are the origin of current organic farming discourse. A detailed history of the organic movement indicates however, that a number of social movements converged to contribute to its development. Particular cultural and socio- demographic changes in the last three decades of the twentieth century produced a new ex-urban organic movement with a new organic... |

A new sponge species, Cladocroce burapha n. sp. (Chalinidae, Haplosclerida, Porifera), is described from Chonburi province, eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand, Thailand. The new species can be separated from other Cladocroce species by a combination of characters, including growth form, form and size of the spicules, and habitat. This is the first record of the genus Cladocroce from Thailand. |
